Use Morningstar Guide to Mutual Funds (an objective, comparative analysis), or similar (e.g. Consumer Reports), in your local public library, or online, to do your own research about mutual funds to buy for the long term.
 
Use Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Mutual Fund or Vanguard's S&P 500 Mutual Fund (a proxy for the S&P 500 index) as your benchmarks, when using Morningstar, etc. It's very difficult to beat the S&P 500 Index, for a variety of reasons, including low costs, great diversification, low tax costs ... and see Vanguard founder, Jack Bogle's further reason's in ScottMacLeod's blog entries below.
